The Tasmanian Greens today repeated their demand for the Bartlett
government to develop a Private Sector Financial Assistance Criteria
framework, following growing disquiet over the ad hoc decision making by
Labor of requests from businesses seeking monetary aid.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that a level playing field is needed to
restore both community trust and business confidence, and that the
current culture of crony capitalism must be done away with.
"Tasmanians want, and deserve, to know by what criteria the Bartlett
government is determining which private business they will help, and
those they deny assistance, such as private Child Care provider Stepping
Stones," Mr McKim said.
"Private Sector Financial Assistance Criteria must be established
immediately, as it is the provision of an equal playing field that truly
boosts business confidence and secures investment, not crony
capitalism."
"In the interests of good governance, openness and transparency, and
improving business confidence, we will expect the support of both the
Labor and Liberal parties when we bring this motion on for a vote."
Text of Motion Tabled Today by Nick McKim MP
That this House directs the Government to immediately develop and
implement Private Sector Financial Assistance Criteria,
1. That are made publicly available so that Tasmanians and the private
sector know what the threshold requirements are for financial assistance
to be sought and granted, and the criteria against which requests are
tested; and
2. To ensure an open, transparent process, and a level playing field,
which would encourage further investment in Tasmania and provide
certainty to the Tasmanian people whose money you manage.
