The Greens will move for a Senate Inquiry into the Government bungling
of the Haneef affair when Parliament resumes on 7th August, 2007
Greens Leader Bob Brown will move that:
The Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional
Affairs inquire into all aspects of the detention and release of Dr
Mohammed Haneef including:
a) The source and veracity of information upon
which decisions were made;
b) The Minister for Immigration's actions including
his override of the Brisbane Magistrate's Court decision to grant Dr
Haneef bail;
c) The roles of other ministers including the
Attorney-General and the Prime Minister;
d) The investigation by the Australian Federal
Police and other agencies;
e) The decisions taken by the Director of Public
Prosecutions;
f) The international impact on Australia of the
Government's handling of the case; and
g) Any future decisions to be made in relation to
Dr Haneef.
Senator Brown said he expected the motion to be debated in the Senate on
Wednesday 8th August.
"Minister Andrews' claim today that Dr Haneef was not of sufficient
character to retain his visa is based on suspicion which has no backup
confirmation or factual evidence. The political driving force in this
sorry saga is all too evident - the Government wanted to capitalise on
the fear of terrorism in the run to the election," Senator Brown said.
