CFMEU's ad campaign understandable but off target - Greens
The CFMEU's climate change TV advertisements should target an end to the
logging and burning of old growth forests as the quickest way to
seriously attack climate change in Australia and overseas, Greens Leader
Bob Brown said today.
"The claim, based on misinformation from the coal corporations, that
"clean coal" technology will be in place by 2014 is simply wrong,"
Senator Brown said. This technology is at least two decades away
because Prime Minister Howard has done nothing on climate change over
the last decade.
That said, the Union's concern for 28,000 coalminers is valid, and its
$1 million campaign understandable. The best way to ensure the workers'
future is to back new technologies, like renewable energy, in areas like
the Hunter Valley where clean coal technology, even if it becomes
available, could not be used for geological reasons," Senator Brown
said.
