Iraq withdrawal: Howard must not wait for Bush, says Brown
Prime Minister Howard must not wait for President Bush's decision to
withdraw troops from Iraq, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"The Prime Minister was described as a 'man of steel' by President Bush
in Canberra in 2003, but he should not be rusted on to the White House,"
Senator Brown said.
"It is compellingly clear that the Bush administration is losing
Republican support in Congress and being forced to consider an Iraq
evacuation. Australian troops in Iraq will be in danger if Mr Howard
follows, rather than leads, the increasingly incapacitated Bush in
bringing troops home," Senator Brown said.
Today's Newspoll shows 63% of voters want a plan for the withdrawal of
Australian troops from Iraq. South Korea is planning to withdraw its
remaining 1200 troops from Iraq by early next year.
