Foreign Aid: Australia's broken promise
4.7.07
The government is still failing in its commitments to the developing
world, Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said today following the release of
the latest UN report on the Millennium Development Goals.
"The Greens advocate the government's aid program being redirected away
from national security and back to poverty alleviation, health and
education.
"The UN report shows some progress across the world but Australia still
lags behind."
"As a global community we are halfway to the 2015 deadline for the goals
but Australia has not even reached the halfway mark in the amount of aid
it provides and the government doesn't have a plan to get there."
"We are breaking our promise to the worlds poor. We must be doing more."
"The report shows that over half a million women still die each year
from treatable and preventable complications of pregnancy and
childbirth, yet our government's reproductive health aid program remains
distorted by conservative values.
"I am currently considering a private members bill to remove the ban on
Australian foreign aid being to provide information on pregnancy
termination."
"Women should have the full range of reproductive services available to
them when they have an unplanned pregnancy," Senator Nettle said.
