No affordability today, no affordability tomorrow


ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has pointed to the ACT Government's failure to
ensure affordability was built into the new East Woden housing
development.

"Nowhere in the Minister's announcement yesterday could I find any
reference to the inclusion of affordable housing" Dr Foskey said today.

"The much vaunted diversity only appears to be about age groups, never
income. Once again, we see the ACT Government focusing on the wealthy
end of the market, where there is less demand, rather than the moderate
and low income earners, where the need is greatest."  
 
"We want a social mix across Canberra, and that should include this new
East Woden Development." 
 
"East Woden sits between the hospital and the Woden Town Centre - and so
it is close to facilities and services. That makes more reasons, rather
than less, to incorporate a percentage of public and community housing
in this development."

"The basic principle, which I hope David Dawes - who has been hand
picked to implement the Government's affordable housing strategy - picks
up, is that affordable housing needs to be a part of every stage of
planning and in every development."

"By leaving it out now, Minister Corbell has made it is very very
unlikely to be incorporated later on." 

"Perhaps he should check the latest ACT Labor Party platform which calls
for social housing to be a part of all developments" Dr Foskey said.
