TULLA DUMP SHOUTING POLLIES GO VERY QUIET
Colleen Hartland has been forced to cancel a meeting between the community
affected by the Tullamarine Toxic Dump and their six elected members, when
it became clear that she was the only MP willing to attend.
"Bernie Finn and Justin Madden have been very brave shouting about the
issue in Parliament,* but they weren?t prepared to sit down with the
community and discuss the community's concerns", said Ms Hartland, the
Greens Upper House member for Western Metropolitan Region.
Ms Hartland also invited local members Martin Pakula, Khalil Eideh and Liz
Beattie and Environment Minister John Thwaites to a meeting with a
delegation of community members on Weds 4 April 2007 at Parliament
House.**
Of the MPs, only Kalil Eideh and Martin Pakula responded. Both declined
the invitation.
"The Tulla Toxic Dump is too important to be used as a political
football", said Ms Hartland. "We're talking about people's health, and
the environment".
"There's been such a lot of movement on the Tulla issue, with the EPA
announcement, and community concerns that the contract's got too much
wriggle room. This would have been the perfect time for the Government to
step in and stake their reputation on the closure, and commit to funding
for a clean-up and health study."
