Record Greens 8% Queensland vote good news for NSW Greens election chances
The record high 8% statewide vote for Greens candidates in the
Queensland election is a good sign for the Greens in the coming NSW
state election, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said today.
"This result is further indication that momentum for the Greens
continues around Australia," Ms Rhiannon said.
"In the 2004 federal election the party received a record vote. In the
Tasmanian election the Greens held all four seats and in South
Australia we received a record vote and a breakthrough to take our
first seat in the SA Upper House.
"We have now gained a record vote in the Queensland state election. In
November the Greens have a good chance of winning seats in the
Victorian state election.
"The 8% vote for the Greens in Queensland suggests that the NSW Greens
are well positioned to increase our vote and possibly pick up more
seats.
"The Greens received strong votes in the seats of South Brisbane with
22% and Mt Coot-tha 21%. In Peter Beattie's seat of Brisbane Central
the Greens polled 19% of the vote with a swing of about 7% from Labor
to the Greens.
"Good results for the Greens in a series of elections are due to our
strong stand on a range of issues that include addressing the causes
of global warming, opposition to WorkChoices, and protection of public
services and the environment," Ms Rhiannon said.
