*QLD GREENS MEDIA RELEASE*
*Saturday 9^th September 2006*
*Greens celebrate outstanding election result*

The Greens have spent tonight celebrating an outstanding state election
result in Queensland.
The Greens maintained votes in excess of 20% in the seats of South
Brisbane and Mount Coot-tha.
They have increased the number of seats where they polled between 15 and
20% from one to five, including Yeerongpilly, Ashgrove, Indooroopilly,
Moggil and Brisbane Central.
They have increased the number of seats where they polled between 10 and
15% from 12 to 19.
The total first preference vote across the state has risen from 6.76% in
2004 to 7.96%, including those seats where the Greens did not stand
candidates.
Greens lead spokesperson, Juanita Wheeler, said it was a fantastic
result for the party.
“We are extremely pleased by the result, especially in light of recent
polling which had many people writing the Greens off as irrelevant in
this campaign,” Ms Wheeler said.

Ms Wheeler said the result tonight highlighted the problem associated
with the absence of proportional representation in Queensland.
“If Queensland had proportional representation akin to that in other
states, such as Tasmania, we would have seen six or seven Greens elected
to parliament tonight.
“One in every twelve Queenslanders wanted to be represented by a Green
in parliament, and yet this significant proportion of the population
will not receive the representation they voted for.
“This will be a major issue for Queenslanders and The Greens in the
future, but for tonight we will focus on the wonderful achievement from
this election.”
