Perth brickworks campaign just beginning
Federal Minister for Transport and Regional Services Warren Truss has
today condemned residents of Perth's Swan Valley to unhealthy levels of
acidic gasses from a giant proposed brickworks on airport land.
Tomorrow Senator Siewert will move a motion in the Senate to halt
further consideration of the brickworks until the health impacts of
existing brickworks emissions have been dealt with.
"Far from being the end of the matter, this appalling decision
represents the beginning of the campaign to have this brickworks
relocated out of the Swan Valley airshed," Senator Rachel Siewert said.
The Department of Environment and Heritage, in it's advice on the
brickworks, has identified significant concerns about acid gas emissions
and the proximity of the brickworks to houses. Minister Truss appears to
have sidestepped these objections.
"It is time for the State Government to put its money where its mouth is
and use every means at its disposal to protect residents of the Swan
Valley who are already living in a heavily contaminated airshed."
