Campbell can stop rock art destruction
Today the Government voted against a Greens motion which aimed at
protecting the unique Burrup Peninsula rock art from further destruction
while it is assessed for National Heritage listing.
"I am extremely concerned that while the Minister for Environment and
Heritage is considering this listing, the Government of Western
Australia is about to sign off on the destruction of even more rock
art," Senator Rachel Siewert said.
"Ian Campbell has already spoken out in support of the extraordinary
cultural heritage precinct of the Burrup," Senator Siewert said.
"I see the value here, I see something quite remarkable, something
unique, something that is important for generations to come." (Sunday,
June 25, 2006, 60 Minutes)
"That support is needed now, not some time in the future after the
Western Australian Government has allowed further vandalism of the
area."
The WA State Government has stated "Any future expansion of the Burrup
will not disturb the Art Galleries". (Sunday, June 25, 2006, 60
Minutes.)
"And yet destruction and relocation is still planned by Woodside Energy
for one of the most densely carved areas of the Burrup."
