Climate change hits home
Members of Waverley council who last night voted against increased coal fired power station energy production should be congratulated, said Ian Cohen, NSW Greens Upper House MP.
Waverley councillors have backed the environment with their motion opposing the proposed Anvil Hill coal mine and calling for the Federal Government to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, Mr Cohen said.
The motion, proposed by Greens councillors, also highlighted the need for a Mandatory Renewable Energy Target in NSW, similar to those announced by Victoria and South Australia. The cap and trade scheme announced by the Government today does not go far enough.
A target is the best way to kick start a state-based industry in clean, renewable energy such as solar and wind power * which would mean more jobs and less greenhouse emissions.
It is disappointing that the Liberal councillors at Waverley voted against the motion.
Climate change, with rising sea levels and changed weather patterns, will affect all of us. It is up to the people of New South Wales to put pressure on the Iemma Government to take action now to reduce greenhouse emissions.
I call on councillors around NSW to put forward similar motions that show concern about climate change present in local communities.
