Bring the three Australians home for trial - Brown
Today's call by Prime Minister Howard for Australia's Guantanamo
detainees, David Hicks and Mamdouh Habib, and Ahmed Aziz Rafiq held in
Iraq, to be tried as soon as possible under a military commission falls
well short of the treatment accorded to US citizens, Greens Senator Bob
Brown said in Washington DC today.
"There are no US citizens at Guantanamo because they were repatriated
and dealt with under US law long ago," Senator Brown said.
"President Bush's military commission is a kangaroo court which is
designed not to give Hicks and Habib a fair trial.
"When he visits Washington next week, Prime Minister Howard should be
demanding that President Bush hand Hicks and Habib to Australian
authorities for trial in Australia and give Australian lawyers and
doctors immediate access to both men.
"Australians will not accept one law for Americans and an inferior one
for Australians," Senator Brown said.
