Greens back Burmese community's call for Aung San Suu Kyi's release
Media Release Thursday 28 May 2004
Greens NSW Senate candidate Dr John Kaye today supported the call by
Burmese community groups in Sydney for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and
the restoration of democracy in Burma.
"The Greens have consistently backed the campaign for democracy and human
rights in Burma," Dr Kaye said.
"It's now been 14 years since the National League for Democracy's
overwhelming victory in the general election. Yet still the cycle of
repression and political violence continues.
"The current constitutional talks are a farce, as Ms Suu Kyi remains under
house arrest and is unable to participate.
"The Greens condemn the Howard Government for its weakness on the Burma issue.
"Prime Minister Howard often talks about repression and abuse in Iraq. But
what about in Burma - our own backyard?
"Far from condemning the abuses, the Prime Minister condones an official
aid program that offers 'human rights training' to military officials.
"Australian aid to Burma continues the whitewash of the Burmese military's
appalling human rights record, and its disgraceful treatment of Ms Suu Kyi.
"On behalf of all Greens members, I congratulate the All-Burma Students
Democratic Organisation, and I look forward to taking up their cause if
elected to the Senate in the coming Federal election," Dr Kaye said.
