Guantanamo visit a real possibility - Brown

Greens Senator Bob Brown said in Sydney today that Foreign Minister
Alexander Downer's office is exploring the possibility of him visiting
the Australians Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks at Guantanamo Bay next
week.

"Mr Downer's office says that it is a short timeframe but I have assured
them that I will stay on in Washington, or return later to enable the
trip. There is no good reason why an Australian MP should not visit two
Australians detained by a friendly country like the US," Senator Brown
said.

Senator Brown will be in Washington next week to attend a conference.

"In view of the disturbing reports of abuse of both Australians my visit
could both help clear the air and bring some comfort to the
Australians," Senator Brown said.
