MEDIA RELEASE

Sunday, 23 May 2004

Greens will make global warming a major election campaign

Russian President Putin's intention to ratify the Kyoto Protocol leaves
Australian business outside one of the most important trading schemes
for the world's future, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"We will be banned from the global carbon trading scheme which the Kyoto
Protocol will open up," Senator Brown said.

"Once again, Prime Minister Howard has damaged Australia by locking in
to the Bush White House against wider world advance. The Kyoto Protocol
is a small but vital first step to the world halting the spectre of
global warming with its massive economic and environmental threats.

"This shows how out of touch eight years in office has left John Howard.
He has left Australia as the worst per capita greenhouse gas polluter
instead of the world's cleanest, greenest nation. He has cut funds to
solar research while boosting funds to coal mining companies.

"Instead of making Australia the world's leading exporter of solar
panels he has made us the leading exporter of coal - as the tide of
history flows the other way."

Senator Brown says the Greens will make Mr Howard's failure to ratify
the Kyoto Protocol a major election campaign, along with the fate of
Tasmania's forests and the Murray River.
