Rail lift - wrong option
"There are much cheaper and more attractive options for a Derwent Valley
tourism option then the proposed rail lift to Abbotts Lookout," Greens
Senator Bob Brown said today.
Senator Brown said that some of these include:
* The presentation of El Grande, the world's biggest hardwood tree near
Wayatinah, with sealed access road, presentation showroom and restaurant
would have cost nearer $1 Million and offered a world's best attraction.
But Forestry Tasmania burnt it
* The whole of the Styx river's Valley of the Giants, including the
world's tallest flowering plants could be transformed into a Giant Trees
National Park with hotel accommodation, airwalk, forest cabins and
picnic areas for a better outcome.
* Abbotts Lookout is surrounded by clearfells and scars in the Tyenna
and Styx valleys. The reference by Mark Latham to protecting the North
Styx now becomes understandable : the North Styx is the foreground for
Forestry Tasmania's lookout and so is to be protected.
* A third option is to refurbish the Derwent Valley railway for all
season trips with easy access and good accommodation in Maydena and the
Styx Valley. This railway would encourage trips to the Mt Field National
Park and Russell Falls and Maydena.
Senator Brown is unavailable for further comment as he is enroute to
Washington.
