Howard's grain of salt may become pillar - Brown

Prime Minister Howard's out-of-hand dismissal of serious charges that US
interrogators bashed Australian prisoner David Hicks are likely to come
back to haunt him, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"Mr Howard says the claims should be taken with a grain of salt. By
turning his back and fleeing from the unfolding evidence of a pattern of
illegal assault, humiliation and degradation of prisoners in
Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Base, Mr Howard may end up a pillar of
political salt himself," Senator Brown said.

"Hicks and Mamdouh Habib should be returned home to Australia and put on
trial for the crimes Mr Howard's government may claim they have
committed.

"I have written to Foreign Minister Downer seeking assistance to meet
the two Australian prisoners when I am in the US next week," Senator
Brown said.
