Greens join picket of Prime Minister's anniversary
Media Release: 20 May 03
Greens NSW Senate candidate John Kaye will join protesters today at the
picket of John Howard's 30th anniversary corporate fundraiser. The picket
will oppose increased troop deployment for Iraq and call for Australian
forces to return from Iraq.
"Today marks 30 years of John Howard's parliamentary career, a career that
mirrors the decline of Australian society and international standing."
"Australia is a more unequal place then when John Howard first entered
Parliament and its ecology is more under threat than ever."
"It is symbolic that Alan Jones is MC at tonight's gathering as John
Howard's government has been marked by spin and equivocation and nowhere is
that more evident than in his policy on Iraq."
"The occupation in Iraq is unravelling. But while even Colin Powell and
senior US military officials are questioning the keeping of troops in Iraq,
John Howard is tying Australia ever more firmly to George Bush's sinking ship."
"The torture and ongoing warfare in Iraq has put paid to any claims of
legitimacy the US, UK and Australia may have had. It is past time to let
Iraqis run their own lives.
"It is clear the people of Iraq do not want to be occupied. We need to get
out of Iraq now."
Protest Picket: Thursday 20 May, 6pm at the Hordern Pavillion
(near Fox Studios)
