Australian troops must be disengaged from Iraq - Greens

Howard's commitment has fostered terrorism

With 80% of Iraqis disapproving of the US troops occupying the country,
Prime Minister John Howard's open-ended commitment of Australian troops
is damaging to our nation's interests, Greens Senator Bob Brown said
today.

Mr Howard's commitment to President Bush on Iraq has rebounded with the
occupation fostering terrorism inside and outside Iraq, Senator Brown
said.

"His actions have obviously already been what he fears a withdrawal may
be - 'a win for violent extremists'," Senator Brown said.

"The Prime Minister's efforts should go into an UN-mediated transfer of
power to the Iraqis and much greater civil aid," Senator Brown said.
