Greens say Rio Tinto should be prosecuted
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle welcomed a NT government decision to refer a
report on the Ranger uranium mine contamination to the Department of
Justice and said given Rio Tinto broke the law they should be
prosecuted.
Senator Nettle said the report by the Department of Business, Industry
and Resource Development should be made public.
Twenty-eight workers at the mine, in Kakadu National Park, reported
nausea, headaches and stomach cramps after drinking the contaminated
water in March.
"Rio Tinto should not be let off the hook. If the report says they have
breached safety laws they must be prosecuted."
"It is in the public interest that this mining giant be held responsible
for the dangerous contamination that has occurred."
"We are glad the Department of Justice will look at the report, but the
NT Labor government should make the report public so the extent of ERA's
breaches can be assessed."
"This report is further damning evidence of why Ranger should be shut
down and uranium mining in Australia should be ended"
