Carr's attack on teachers is a dangerous distraction
MEDIA RELEASE: 13 May 04
Greens NSW Education spokesperson and Senate candidate Dr John Kaye today
condemned the Carr government's move to re-open the teachers' pay case.
Dr Kaye said: "The Carr government's move to re-open the pay case before
the Industrial Relations Commission is incompetent and immoral.
"Labor's application to introduce new evidence is an insult to the State's
public sector teachers and a betrayal of the principle of the independence
of the Commission.
"There is no new information. It is simply an attempt to have a second bite
of the cherry to sway the Commission away from the undeniable justice of a
substantial pay increase for teachers.
"The reopening of the pay case will inevitably result in industrial action.
The Carr government must wear all the blame for the damage this will cause.
"The Carr government's move will distract attention from the introduction
of the Federal government's new schools funding legislation.
"At a time when everyone who cares about the future of public education is
focused on defeating Howard's horrendous schools funding legislation, the
Carr government reopens the State pay case. This is treachery.
"The Greens call on the NSW government to retract their application to
reopen the case and to concentrate on the main game in town: getting the
Federal government to massively increase their funding of public schools,"
Dr Kaye said.
