Greens ensure school enrolment trends
considered by inquiry

Greens Education Spokesperson, Kerry Nettle, today was successful in
ensuring that a senate committee inquiry into the funding effect of
schools will examine the key issue of government policy effects on
enrolment trends between public and private schools.

"The Greens are deeply concerned that the unfair schools funding
policies of the Howard government are driving down public school
enrolments in favour of the more generously funded private sector,"
Senator Nettle said.

"The Greens are happy that the issue of enrolments will now be
considered in the upcoming inquiry as a result of our amendment.

"The appalling bias toward the private sector from this government has
been exacerbated by the recent budget announcements.

"If the funding priorities of the government continue they will threaten
the viability of individual public schools and undermine the sector as a
whole.

"All governments should have the provision of universal high quality
public education at the top of their agenda. If public enrolments are
falling then that's a problem we should be fixing."
