ORGAN WELCOMES EXTENSION OF THE EDUCATIONAL LENDING RIGHT SCHEME
Extension of the Educational Lending Right for another four years to
authors whose books are held in school, TAFE and university libraries is
welcome news for Australian culture Cunningham MP Michael Organ said
tonight.
"I am pleased that my lobbying of Arts Minister Senator Rod Kemp has
paid off", Mr. Organ said.
"Being an author is an emotionally rewarding job but unfortunately it is
often far from financially rewarding, and ELR ensures that authors are
partially reimbursed for the 'lost income' from books being lent out in
educational libraries such as those in schools and universities".
"As an author myself, and a former copyright officer with the University
of Wollongong, I am aware of the issue of payments to authors including
the ELR scheme which I strongly support."
"ELR was previously funded from 2000-01 to 2003-04 as part of the
government's Book Industry Assistance Plan, and it is very pleasing to
see the government allocating $44 million over four years from 2004-05
to continue it. I congratulate Minister Kemp for his efforts in arguing
for its continuation," Mr. Organ said.
