This is not a family budget

"This is not a family budget, it's a short sighted election bribe, "
Senator Nettle said.

"If the Treasurer were really in tune with the long term needs of
Australian families he would have invested the $19 billion in election
bribes on real paid maternity leave, and the public services young
families need," Senator Nettle said

"This budget attempts to buy families votes before the election and
fails to deliver a national paid parental leave scheme.

"Six hundred dollars in June and another in July is a nice pre-election
windfall for some but when this money has gone families will still be
left paying higher doctor, school and university fees.

"The government has delivered a maternity payment. This is good but it
is not a leave scheme.

"A parental leave scheme needs to include a return to work entitlement.
In the UK the onus is on employers to explain why a woman can not return
to part time work

"Howard has not delivered a parental leave scheme in this budget. The
message is clear: We will never get a parental leave scheme under a
Howard government.

"On childcare the government has proposed to meet just one quarter of
the unmet demand for childcare places.
