STRONGEST ECONOMY IN THE WESTERN WORLD BYPASSES THE ILLAWARRA

John Howard's boast that the Australian people heard the story of the
strongest economy in the western world tonight shows just how completely
out of touch he is with ordinary people, Cunningham MP Michael Organ
said this evening.

"The people of Wollongong have been labouring under an unemployment rate
around 10% for the last year while Howard and his ministers have been
bragging about record low jobless levels, so it's clear that the economy
has had an Illawarra bypass", Mr. Organ said.

"Our youth jobless rate is even worse, and it's just stupid and
insulting for the Prime Minister to mouth platitudes about more choice
for people who are already struggling."

"John Howard is trying to protect his own back by buttering up Peter
Costello with flattery."

"Try telling the battlers of Wollongong that the Treasurer's remarkable
work over the last eight years has been an heroic economic achievement;
they'll laugh in your face", Mr. Organ said.
