Industry report predicts 15,000 new jobs 


Upper House Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has called on the Government to implement a major industry report released today, whose recommendations would create 15,000 jobs and produce major economic and ecological benefits. 

Ms Rhiannon said, "A 10c refundable deposit on stubbies and other containers would create 15,000 jobs while saving resources, easing Sydney's landfill crisis and generating over $70m in economic benefits for NSW annually. 

"The Government should immediately implement this independent report's recommendations to create a vibrant, new eco-industry in this state. 

"The Greens used the Upper House to force the Government to release this major report on creating eco-jobs in container recycling industries in NSW.

"Last year Bob Carr pre-empted the report with his promise to industry heavyweights that he opposes legislating to bring about these great recycling initiatives. 

"We note that key donors to the major parties are involved in old-style container industries including Coca-Cola Amatil who gave $200,000 to Labor in 2000/1," said Ms Rhiannon.

The Carr Government commissioned the report in 2000 from Dr Stuart White and the Institute for Sustainable Futures. A Greens motion in the Upper House ordered the report's public release no later than 12 April 2002.
