Lesbian MP push on sexuality laws 


Australia's first openly lesbian MP, West Australian Green Giz Watson, will be in Sydney in the lead up to the Mardi Gras to call for NSW anti-discrimination law to be 'harmonised' up to a new national standard. 

Ms Watson, MLC today said, "I will be proposing to Greens MPs in NSW that they push for the law to be harmonised upwards to the new standard we hope to set in WA. 

"Western Australia's Parliament is currently debating new anti-discrimination measures for lesbians and gays which will leapfrog NSW law if they pass.

"The Greens have used our balance of power in the WA Upper House to push the Government towards setting a new standard for sexuality rights. 

"The Greens MPs in WA, NSW, Tasmania and the ACT can push for harmonisation of discrimination laws to create a defacto national code while we have a conservative Federal Government who lag behind the world on human rights, " said Ms Watson.

NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said, "Since Sydney is the gay capital of Australia we should make sure that NSW has the best sexuality rights laws in the country," said Ms Rhiannon.
