MEDIA RELEASE
18 February 2002
New Sydney reactor an unacceptable risk
Upper House Greens MP Lee Rhiannon today spoke in support of national protests against the new nuclear reactor planned for Sydney and said it posed an unacceptable risk to the city and the environment.
Ms Rhiannon said, "This weeks' protests by the community living around Lucas Heights and supporters across Australia will show that people oppose the new nuclear reactor.
"We believe that the nuclear regulator should not grant the licence for the new reactor in the light of the September 11 terrorist attacks, which demonstrated a new type of threat to a facility such as this.
"The September 11 terrorist attacks made it perfectly clear that a nuclear reactor in an urban area poses an unacceptable risk to people and the environment.
"The Greens want the major parties to commit to closing down Sydney's reactor and promise not to build a replacement," said Ms Rhiannon.
The N96 protests against the new nuclear reactor will run from today until 21st February in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. Australia's nuclear regulatory body (ARPANSA) is due to announce today whether or not it is granting a licence to build the new reactor at Lucas Heights.
