Howard's Backing of Bush's Kyoto Alternative is Forelock Tugging

US President Bush's alternative to the Kyoto climate change treaty is a
deceit and Prime Minister Howard's backing of it is forelock, Greens Senator
Bob Brown said today.

"The projected cuts to greenhouse emissions announced by President Bush over
night actually equate to a 29% increase over 1990 levels.  Under the Kyoto
treaty the US was supposed to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions by 7% below
1990," Senator Brown said.

"The projected Bush increase equates to more emissions than are currently
produced by Australia, the UK and Canada put together.  President Bush is
pushing for an increase equivalent to 3 or 4 Australias worth of emissions.

"For Howard to give the plan in principle backing is forelock tugging at its
worse.

"Australia could be a world leader in helping addressing the catastrophe of
climate change instead John Howard seems intent on playing deputy sheriff to
the greatest polluter the world has ever seen: George W Bush," Senator Brown
said.
