Greens Decisive in Ryan - Brown
The Greens' decision to direct preferences to Labor delivered an extra 600
to 800 votes, without which the Liberals would have held the seat, Senator
Bob Brown said today.
"A comfortable Liberal win has turned into what appears now to be a
wafer-thin Labor win", he said.
Senator Brown said the key factors involved were
* Labor's commitment to phase out woodland clearing in
Queensland
* Liberals' refusal to match Labor
* The Greens' decision to direct preference to Labor
"After the WA state poll result, which turned on an end to old growth forest
logging, this result proves the environment is a potent vote determinant.
It will be at the federal polls. A key issue will be the woodchipping of
Tasmania's grand eucalypt forests and rainforests under Prime Minister
Howard's personally signed Regional Forest Agreement", Senator Brown said.
