Mount Arthur Woodchipping

Greens Senator Bob Brown joined a logging protest with 50 local residents at
Mount Arthur near Launceston today.

"The rainforest set aside under the Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) as
protected forests has been logged," Senator Brown said.

"Prime Minister Howard signed the RFA in 1997 and promised this area would
be protected. He, along with Premier Bacon, has broken that promise.

"The logging, which is totally destructive of the rainforest and wildlife,
is a breach of faith with the Tasmanian public by both political leaders.

"Somewhere between 1997 and now, 1000 hectares was ripped out of the Mount
Arthur Forest Reserve leaving only 866 hectares.

"The area is being woodchipped for Gunns Pty Ltd which yesterday took over
Australia's biggest woodchipping Company Nth Pty Ltd.

"The logging involves breaches of the forest practices code which sets out
quality standards under the RFA.

"Mr Howard's Regional Forest Agreement is not worth the paper it is written
on. An immediate halt to this logging should be ordered from Canberra if not
Hobart," Senator Brown said.
