MEDIA RELEASE MEDIA RELEASE
ACT GREENS MLA KERRIE TUCKER
=============
THURSDAY 8 MARCH 2001
Gungahlin Drive must not go through parkland
Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker warned the Government that its latest plan for
Gungahlin Drive would not succeed. Speaking after the tabling of the Urban
Services Committee report recommending the eastern alignment for Gungahlin
Drive today, Ms Tucker said-
"If Gungahlin Drive is to proceed, there is a better option - to take it
through the AIS carpark. That route would impact significantly less on
Canberra Nature Park, and be a simpler engineering task. Unfortunately, the
Government and its supporters in the Assembly think a car park is more
important than a nature park on Bruce and O'Connor Ridge."
"The Government, Mr Rugendyke and their mates from the big end of town
evidently care nothing about protecting the environment or the quality of
life of the people in Canberra."
"While we are arguing about which road corridor should be used, there are
broader issues that the Government ought to address."
"The Government is not serving Gungahlin residents. It is doing nothing to
provide employment in Gungahlin. Rather it is doing the reverse. Just
last week we heard the Minister Mr Smyth supporting the massive commercial
development planned for the airport."
"The Government has also gone backwards in its commitment to public
transport, particularly for Gungahlin residents with the introduction of the
zone system."
"When the Government announced its greenhouse target it made a commitment to
producing an integrated transport and land use strategy. We have yet to see
that strategy. This Government is to be condemned for claiming credit for
having a greenhouse target and strategy, while in the area of transport it
is taking action guaranteed to increase greenhouse emissions."
"This isn't the end of the issue" Ms Tucker said. "There will be a very
strong community reaction to this disappointing report, and a later
opportunity for the Assembly to stand up for the interests of Canberra
people."
