Greens Senator Says Beazley's Land Clearing Statement is 'Just Great!'.

Greens Senator Bob Brown has welcomed the ALPs land clearing commitment as
'just great'.

"It's not as swift and tough as we'd like but it means that the alternative
party of government has a national policy to end Australia's role as one of
the world's worst land clearers. We are there with the Congo, Brazil and
Bolivia and alone amongst wealthy nations amongst the 6 worst destroyers of
native vegetation around the globe. It had to end, and the ALP has at least
responded after 5 years of Howard Government inaction.

"Labor has followed up its courageous decision to end almost all old-growth
forest woodchipping in Western Australia with this breakthrough. We would
have preferred some tighter guidelines including a 2 year phase-out rather
than 5 years but, remembering the Howard Government denied the Democrats
this outcome during the GST deal two years ago, the Queensland Greens have
had a major win.

"I'm delighted. Labor deserves the Greens preferences in Ryan", Senator
Brown said.
