MEDIA RELEASE MEDIA RELEASE

ACT GREENS MLA KERRIE TUCKER

=============

WEDNESDAY 7 FEBRUARY 2001

MEDIA ALERT

Greens in Assembly Today

Greens MLA Kerrie Tucker today will
· introduce a bill to amend the Land Act to remove the category of Defined
Land,
· put a motion calling on the Government to defer a controversial land sale
at the Latham shops,
· debate an ACT Greens bill to require food outlets to recycle or reuse
crockery or cutlery used on their premises,
· and move to amend Mr Rugendyke's proposed inquiry into petrol prices

Land Act
"The Greens Bill would remove from the Land Act the category of Defined Land
and so force the Government to go through formal plan variation processes
when it changes the zoning in new suburbs" Ms Tucker said today.

Latham
"Our motion today will call on the Government to postpone the auction of
land next door to the proposed Latham shops redevelopment. The Government
simply presumes this controversial redevelopment will go ahead and is
selling the land on that basis. The redevelopment application for the shops
has drawn many objections from the surrounding population, and is sure to go
to the AAT. If the Government proceeds with this land sale it makes a
mockery of the development appeals process."

 Containers
"The Shopping Containers Bill will require eateries to either recycle or
reuse items such as cutlery, packaging, plates and cups for food eaten on
the premises. The eateries most likely to be affected will be those using
environmentally unfriendly items like styrofoam cups or disposable plastic
plates and cutlery."

Petrol
"We plan to amend Mr Rugendyke's motion so as to inquire into the level of
dependence in the ACT community on the use of private vehicles for
transport, the environmental and social impacts of this dependence and its
impact on local fuel demand and price" Ms Tucker said
