Wangari Maathai Arrested in Kenya
Well-known activist and Goldman Environmental Prize winner Professor Wangari
Maathai was arrested yesterday in Kenya when she joined community members in
the Wmea Kirinyaga district to protest against the degazettal of 167 000
hectares of forest land.
Fellow Goldman Prizewinner, Greens Senator Bob Brown, called for her
immediate release and said he had written to the Kenyan High Commissioner in
Canberra, Mr Loyatum, to express his concern.
"Professor Wangari Maathai is internationally renowned as the founder of the
Kenyan Green Belt Movement. She was arrested as she travelled to a peaceful
protest, erecting a billboard and planting trees.
"I am extremely concerned for her welfare and for that of other less
well-known Kenyans who are joining her to protest against the privatisation
of around 14% of Kenya's forests.
"Professor Maathai is to be my guest at the Global Greens 2001 conference in
Canberra in April and will have the full support of Greens around the
world", said Senator Brown.
