Divestment campaign: SA’s future is in clean energy, not fossil fuels
South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called on South Australian universities to divest from fossil fuel companies and reinvest in the future of the state; renewable energy.
“As a clean energy power-house, the push towards renewables will help to secure the economic future of South Australia for generations to come,” Senator Hanson-Young said.
“South Australia is a state of enormous potential, with some of the greatest academic institutions and clean energy companies. By separating from fossil fuels, and the mining lobbyists who support them, Adelaide’s universities can do a great service to this state and its people.
“Analysis form the Climate Institute has predicted that the renewables sector will create close to 5,000 South Australian jobs by 2030.
“Wind and solar projects are already investing billions of dollars in SA and employing thousands of people across the state.
“Businesses and individuals should be free to choose where, when and how they invest.
“In divesting, the ANU made a sensible and commendable choice. They’ve led the way in divestment in the same way that South Australia has led the way on renewable energy.”
