The Northern Territory Greens condemn the Giles government’s move to gut
the inquiry into political donations.

“Adam Giles had the opportunity to support open transparency and allow
donations to all political parties and candidates to be investigated by an
independent body.” said NT Greens convenor, Owen Gale.

“Instead Giles is using the excuse of reducing the time limits to replace
the inquiry with an internal investigation by the office of the Chief
Minister. This leaves the investigation open to accusations of bias.

“The reported contribution of more than $200,000 in clandestine funds to
the CLP needs to be investigated by an independent inquiry - not an
investigator appointed by the Department of the Chief Minister. Not
declaring large political donations in the NT is illegal and should be
investigated as such.

“The NT Greens comply with the Australian Greens practice of publishing all
donations above $1,500 per year on an on-line list at greens.org.au/donors.
This exceeds the level of transparency required under electoral law, and we
challenge all other parties to establish the same level of honesty and
openness.”
