Teacher survey shows need for better training, support

The Australian Greens have called on the Government to improve teacher training, as a survey reveals new teachers want more help managing difficult classroom situations.

Australian Greens spokesperson for schools Senator Penny Wright said the survey also revealed the extent of teacher workloads and the need for more out-of-class time to prepare.

“If we want to build a smarter, stronger Australia, schools must have sufficient resources to properly support teachers in the crucial job they do,” Senator Wright said.

“The Australian Greens believe respect for teachers and teaching must be genuinely reflected in fair wages, appropriate career structures and support and time to prepare their lessons.”

The Staff in Australia's Schools report reveals teachers spend an average of 48 hours per week on school-related activities.

The survey also includes the first nationally published data on class sizes, with 25 students per class in primary schools.

“New teachers often feel under-prepared and under-supported,” Senator Wright said. “Dedicated and integrated mentoring programs for those in the early stages of their career are needed to support them to be their best - and ensure we don't lose them.”
