Greens call on Abbott to rule out poker machine childcare centres
A plan to entice NSW poker machine clubs into offering childcare through increased tax breaks is ridiculous and should be cancelled, the Australian Greens have said.
"Dumping children next to poker machines at the local club is no way to tackle the childcare crisis in Australia," the Greens' childcare spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"Offering childcare at the pokies is fraught with danger and will only encourage parents into problem gambling.
"The Abbott government must rule out allowing this to occur.
"This is a ridiculous move that could be avoided if the Abbott government committed to properly funding the childcare sector.
"Childcare is more than just babysitting. It's the first formal education that most people receive and it shouldn't be taking place amongst poker machines.
"All Australian children deserve the best possible start to life. Mums and dads across the country are calling out for affordable, flexible, high quality care but it seems the Abbott government is refusing to listen."
