Greens MP Congratulates Community Group for 11,000 Signatures against NorthConnex Smokestacks; Places Motion for Parliamentary Inquiry
Greens NSW MP and Spokesperson for Transport, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has congratulated community group "Communities Against Polluting Stacks' (CAPS) for collecting almost 11,000 signatures which will trigger a parliamentary debate on the petition. Dr Faruqi will also place a motion calling for a parliamentary inquiry into the project this afternoon.
"Congratulations to the 'Communities Against Polluting Stacks' for collecting almost 11,000 signatures in a short period of time. This is a testament to overwhelming community concern about NorthConnex white elephant.
"I will be placing a motion to establish a parliamentary inquiry into the NorthConnex project this afternoon. There are too many unanswered questions about the unsolicited proposal process, the health impacts on communities as well as the project's ability to actually reduce congestion on Pennant Hills road.
"In the absence of transparency from the Baird government, it has become necessary to call for an inquiry.
"Polluting stacks in residential areas are a massive health concern, with thousands of residents and school children potentially exposed to tunnel pollution from this new toll road.
"NorthConnex is an unsolicited toll road that will cost billions, fail to reduce congestion on Pennant Hills road and waste much needed public funds that should be going towards real alternatives that work, such as freight on rail and public transport solutions.
