With the current lease on the existing Skate Park expiring in coming weeks the Greens have today called on the Weatherill Labor Government to urgently commit to funding for the relocation of a central city skate space.
Greens Youth, Sports and Recreation spokesperson, Tammy Franks MLC, said: "A central, open and vibrant skate park is currently an asset for our city; an asset which - through lack of care - our community is set to lose next month.
"Skate parks are excellent social spaces and skating is a popular spectator sport. The loss of our current skate park makes our city less vibrant and shows a disdain for young people who enthusiastically use that space now. The loss is also quite avoidable and the delay until the new park opens must now be minimised as far as possible.
"It beggars belief that there aren't at least some rough plans or consultation going on when one considers the length of time for which the Government has known about the park's impending closure.
"It should be patently obvious to many on Council and in Executive Government that if a city doesn't have a Skate Park, the whole city becomes a Skate park. While skating can co-exist happily with other city spaces, there is no replacement for an actual skate park.
"Today in Parliament the Greens are backing the SA Skate Space Association's call for the State Government to make a financial commitment for the relocation and redevelopment of a central city skate space. We call on Labor to prove that - as they have tweeted - 'Jay really does 'get it', and urgently act to secure skating space in our so-called vibrant city" she concluded.
