Greens call for work to stop on Moore Park Bridge
Greens NSW MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has called for work to stop and for the Government to go back to the drawing board on the proposed Moore Park Bridge. The Bridge, which is expected to cost more than $25 million, has been heavily criticised by cyclists, pedestrian groups and local communities who have accused the government of failing to consult effectively on the plan.
"Despite widespread condemnation and concerns with the proposed Moore Park Bridge, the government has already begun work on this expensive bridge that doesn't meet the needs of the community.
"Given the significant opposition to the bridge in its current form, and the complete lack of meaningful consultation, the government must go back to the drawing board and cease work.
"A new active transport route linking east and west Moore Park could be beneficial, but this bridge isn't it.
"The bridge over Anzac Parade does not integrate with the existing cycleway or shared path on Anzac Parade and will require cyclists using the bridge to cross the high-speed Anzac Parade busway to access the cycleway.
"The Government is being negligent by making this decision in isolation from the coming changes from the South East Light Rail, including another crossing that may involve another bridge or a tunnel nearby.
"The size and placement of the bridge will involve significant intrusion into the Moore Park, which is an historic part of Sydney and a place of extraordinary heritage significance.
"Any new infrastructure must be designed to minimise environmental and heritage impacts on this important public space.
"I asked a question to the Minister last week, to which he gave an answer which many communities found condescending and outrageous, especially given the lack of effective consultation on this important issue", she concluded.
