Greens spokesperson for Women throws support behind global campaign: One Billion Rising

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren will today speak at the Perth event for One Billion Rising - a global campaign to end violence against women. 

"Last year on February 14 one billion people in 207 countries rose and danced to demand an end to violence against women, hopefully this event will be even bigger and brimming with the same message through dance and celebration". 

"Late last year I laid a flower in respect to those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, 18-24 victims had lost their lives in Western Australia alone. We want to see those numbers dropping; we must continue unity in a shift towards justice that is supported by communities and by local, federal and state government". 

"At the moment there are not enough women's refuge in the state, not enough is being done to specifically target groups that are more at risk, including young women, indigenous women, women living with a disability". 

"We need to see a fundamental change in attitude, global campaigns such as One Billion Rising speed up this positive transition". 

"The Greens WA believes that women have the right to live their lives free of violence, harassment, prejudice and discrimination. Social and economic structures which disadvantage women must be changed".
