Greens tobacco divestment campaign bears more fruit
Australian Greens health spokesperson, Senator Richard Di Natale, has welcomed an announcement today by the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation at Senate Estimates that it is divesting its tobacco holdings of approximately $100 million.
"This announcement is a win for the public health and a win for common sense," said Senator Di Natale, a former GP and public health professional.
"It makes absolutely no sense for public money to be invested in such an insidious industry.
"The Greens and the public health community have long campaigned to get public funds out of tobacco so I am very pleased with the announcement today, which comes on the back of a similar decision by the Future Fund in February.
"I would like to congratulate the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation for coming to this just decision."
