Morrison opts for secrecy over transparency despite Senate order for documents
Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has failed to reveal documents to the Senate regarding on-water operations conducted under Operation Sovereign Borders, the Australian Greens have said.
"The government has defied the order and now it will be left to the Senate to decide the consequence," the Greens' immigration spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"The Greens will now move a motion to stall all immigration related bills in the Senate until Scott Morrison provides a satisfactory level of transparency about his Operation Secret Boats sham.
"It makes you wonder, what exactly is this government trying to hide?"
On Thursday of last week the Greens moved an Order for Production of Documents that was passed by the Senate, ordering the government to detail all on water events since the September election.
The Minister has failed to table those documents and has instead offered a 'private briefing' and a binder full of transcripts of Operation Sovereign Borders press conferences.
"This isn't about private briefings to me or the members of my party, this is about the Australian people and their right to know," Senator Hanson-Young said.
"The Minister is thumbing his nose at both the Senate and the public, but the Greens will continue to prosecute the case for transparency in the Senate."
