Greens seek urgent action on age discrimination
The Australian Greens said today that discrimination against older workers will be an increasing problem in coming years as Australia's population ages, unless urgent action is taken.
"Older workers frequently tell me of the problems they have trying to find work," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on families and community services said today.
"These are experienced workers who would bring their substantial knowledge and wide range of skills to the workforce, but they are being discriminated against.
"As our population ages, more people will be looking to stay in the workforce for longer, be it in full time, part time or volunteer roles.
"Age discrimination is a significant barrier to employment and is one of the reasons that one is three people on Newstart is aged over 45.
"On the flip side of this issue, those that are being discriminated against are forced to live in poverty on the inadequate Newstart allowance. Increasing Newstart by $50 per week is an important part of caring for older jobseekers, that can ensure they stay work ready and healthy.
"We also need to be providing training and support to those who want to update their skill base.
"Training and support programs can help break down the barriers to employment for older workers, yet I have heard many accounts of older workers being denied access to support packages by their job service providers.
"Keeping people in grinding poverty inevitably leads to an erosion of their assets and makes it harder for them to have a good quality of life once they retire.
"Older Australians very clearly have the capacity and desire to continue to make strong, positive contributions to our communities, and the Government needs to work on ensuring this happens," Senator Siewert concluded.
