Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber calls for urgent assistance for the
dairy sector, as hay prices skyrocket.
"These rocketing prices are the continuing effects of the summer heatwave.
Those who have hay appear to be holding on to it as they wait and see what
next spring looks like. Farmers in crisis don't have the cash to pay for
it anyway."
"The last twelve months' weather has created a crisis in the diary
industry, and it is a taste of things to come."
"Lower annual rainfall, more heatwaves, more extreme dumps of rain over a
short period, that's the Victorian Government's prediction under climate
change models. "
"Who is helping dairy farmers to adapt? Certainly not the supermarkets,
who picked the worst possible time to launch a milk price war. Not local
Libs like Simon Ramsay, who make light of the problem."
" By 2070, Warrnambool could have the average temperature of Horsham and
the average rainfall of Hamilton. By south west standards, that would be a
state of permanent drought."
