Low payments deny a New Start for struggling South Australians
The Greens are urging Kevin Rudd to support struggling South Australians and increase the Newstart Allowance by $50 per week.
"Too many South Australians are struggling to survive on $35 a day," Greens Senator for South Australia, Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"There are more than 34,000 South Australian job seekers receiving welfare payments, with the majority living on the insufficient Newstart allowance.
"With the number of South Australians on Newstart increasing, it's becoming harder for them to break the cycle of poverty and regain their independence.
"It's time for the old parties to support a payment increase of $50 per week to make sure vulnerable South Australians don't slip even further below the poverty line.
"The Greens want to help people who find themselves out of work, rather than continue to punish them and make their daily pressures increase.
"More than 650,000 Australians are struggling to survive on Newstart around the country and more needs to be done to make sure they aren't condemned to a life of poverty."
