Woodchipping in Leadbeaters Possum habitat paid just $6.2 million, in
another year the Victorian public "lost money on every truck of logs",
according to the latest figures tabled in Victorian Parliament this week*,
says Greens Leader Greg Barber.
"For $6.2 million, we get our water supply damaged, huge carbon emissions
and the likely extinction of our state faunal emblem, the Leadbeaters
Possum," said Greg Barber
"State-owned logging company VicForests, which is meant to be a commercial
entity, has made another in a long line of losses."**
"The Coalition said they would turn it around and make it work, but if you
lose money on every truck of logs, you can't make a profit by increasing
volume."
"The pulpmill that received the wood from Leadbeaters Possum habitat in
the Central Highlands is well on the way to using plantation wood. The
Greens want to see that transition sped up and get out of native forests
within a few short years," said Mr Barber
